The Football Blog Fantasy League Update – Gameweek 2

After some intriguing results in the Premier League, not least Manchester United’s defeat to Burnley last night, gameweek 2 of fantasy football is now complete and The Football Blog’s league table makes for interesting reading with a clear leader emerging.

Following two excellent weeks, Will Taylor’s ‘Sheikh Up’ have shot to the top with an impressive haul of 136 points. His decision to make Glen Johnson captain for gameweek 2 looks to have been an inspired one, with the Liverpool netting him 36 points. There were also important contributions from Frank Lampard and Wilson Palacios.

It remains early days however. The fixtures are coming thick and fast, with all twenty clubs in action between Saturday and Monday for gameweek 3. Those fantasy managers looking to make changes to their squads will have been given plenty of food for thought over the last week.

Jermain Defoe’s hat trick last night must have put him to the forefront of a lot of managers’ minds, and at 8.5 million seems relatively good value. Those looking for a quick return from the most expensive midfielders in the game, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, will not have been disappointed. However, in superb form and at 1.9 million less, Cesc Fabregas surely has to be considered. Arsenal are at home against a woeful looking Portsmouth side this weekend and some managers may look to capitalise on this.

And what of Manchester United? One goal in two games, both against newly promoted sides, does not engender much early confidence in their attacking options. Their defence is also weakened in the absence of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. You would be foolish to write off the champions however, and those who persevere with United players should be rewarded.

Let us know your thoughts on the action so far. Who will you be looking to in the transfer market this week? Which player is a ‘must have’ in your opinion? And who will you be looking to get rid of at the earliest available opportunity?
