As if the prospect of a totally one-sided affair wasn’t enough to keep fans away from England’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra tomorrow night at Wembley, it looks like they will be kept away by a tube strike and lack of alternative methods to travel to the stadium.
In a situation which could only be made in England, at a stadium which cost £800 million to build, the only way that appears viable for fans to get to it is by foot or by taxi. With no park-and-ride facilities, limited car parking and Wembley overground station shut, the FA can expect a lot of applicants for the refund on offer to those who can not make the game.
As for the match itself, Fabio Capello is considering whether to rest a trio of players who are one yellow card away from suspension. David Beckham, Glen Johnson and Emile Heskey may all get an evening off, although Beckham has been touted as a possible replacement for the suspended Gareth Barry in midfield.
Elsewhere, Capello may be thinking about replacing the underwhelming Theo Walcott on the right hand side of midfield, with Shaun Wright-Phillips likely to be the beneficiary. However, it is likely he will persist with the unconvincing Matthew Upson as a partner in central defence for John Terry, with Rio Ferdinand still unfit.
Any reshuffle Capello makes, enforced or voluntary, should make little difference to the outcome of the match. The only question will be how many people will be there to witness it.
