Arsenal’s young guns are firing on all cylinders at the moment but they may have to turn their fancy football into silverware this season if they want to keep hold of Cesc Fabregas.
Fabregas has been the catalyst behind Arsenal’s fantastic form throughout the whole of this season but there are worries he has begun to grow frustrated with the lack of success at The Emirates Stadium.
It has been five years since Arsenal last won a major honour and that is too long for a player of his calibre.
The Spaniard added to his wondergoal against Tottenham at the weekend with a brace against AZ Alkmaar in the Champions League giving him a total of eight goals for the season – but he is so much more than a goalscoring threat for Arsene Wenger’s side.
He is the epitome of Arsenal’s eye-catching brand of passing football. He is always available for a pass whilst his vision, control and football brain are second to none.
It’s no wonder Pep Guardiola wants to bring the 22-year-old back to Barcelona. Fabregas learnt his trade at the Nou Camp before being snapped by Arsenal at the age of 16.
Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration for the midfielder as he looks to add to a squad hoping to retain the European Cup and the Primera Liga.
Fabregas may have denied all rumours of a return to Spain but if Arsenal fail to maintain their title challenge this year then the midfielder’s exit could be inevitable.
The Gunners’ captain is too good to be in a team that is only battling for a Champions League spot in the closing months of the season. He would be a huge asset to Barcelona or any other team in Europe.
Of course, Arsenal have no reason to sell their star asset. Fabregas has a healthy chunk of his contract remaining.
But manager Arsene Wenger does have a history of selling players at the peak of their career in order to get the best value.
With youngsters like Ramsey, Song and Wilshere beginning to prove their worth to the Gunners boss, he may well decide to cash in if Fabregas does grow frustrated at the lack of honours at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are already through to the knockout stages of the Champions League and are far from out of this season’s title race. They were just two points off the pace before Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United.
But their recent 2-2 draw at West Ham, where they surrendered a two goal lead, suggests they are still lacking the steel required for a 38-game title race.
However, Wenger remains confident that his captain can lead the Gunners’ to silverware after five years of waiting.
If he doesn’t get his hands on a trophy this season, then Cesc may be well seeking glory elsewhere.
Can Fabregas lead Arsenal to glory this season? Or should he leave the Emirates Stadium? Is he good enough for Barcelona? Leave your comments below.
