It’s the highlight of Sky Sports News’ calendar, the day when reporters are dispatched to a variety of Premier League stadiums and training grounds in a vain attempt to get an exclusive story; yes, it’s transfer deadline day. They haven’t been much to write home about in recent seasons, so is this one likely to be any different? Probably not. The lack of funds currently available mean that most clubs will be on the look-out for a loan bargain rather than spending millions, but that’s not to say there won’t be a few interesting moves before the 6pm deadline.
Already confirmed is Schalke’s €13 million capture of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from AC Milan, presumably as a result of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move from Barcelona to the San Siro. Robinho is also widely rumoured to be joining the Swedish striker at Milan, but perhaps more surprising is the early morning rumour surrounding his current Manchester City team mate, Emmanuel Adebayor. It has been suggested that Harry Redknapp is looking to add a second former Arsenal player to the Spurs’ ranks and take Adebayor to White Hart Lane on loan for the season.
Redknapp may also try to make amends for an uncharacteristically quite summer of spending by bringing in Ashley Young and Scott Parker to bolster his midfield. He is hoping to secure the signature of the latter by offering Robbie Keane as part of the deal, with the Irishman also considered a target for Newcastle after being told he has no future at Tottenham. A move to Upton Park may in turn pave the way for Carlton Cole to join Liverpool as backup to Fernando Torres, with Paul Konchesky’s move to Anfield almost a formality.
There may also be a resolution in the Arsenal goalkeeping situation, although whether that will see Mark Schwarzer move to the Emirates is unclear after Shay Given’s expressed his intention to stay at Manchester City and thus end any possibility of Mark Hughes taking him to Fulham as a replacement for Schwarzer. Lyon and France’s Hugo Lloris has been touted as an alternative target for Arsene Wenger. Heading out of the Arsenal exit door would appear to be Armand Traore however, with both Birmingham and Juventus apparently keen.
The Blues have also been linked with former Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb, whilst Asamoah Gyan has arrived in Sunderland to discuss a possible move from Rennes. Elsewhere, Ian Holloway appears keen to add further to his Blackpool squad with Everton’s James Vaughan the main target, Eidur Gudjohnsen could be on his way to either Fulham or Stoke, as could Real Mardrid’s Royston Drenthe, Wigan are attempting to secure a return to the DW stadium for Jason Roberts, whilst Jack Rodwell continues to be mentioned in the same sentence as Manchester United.
So lots of deals mooted then, but how many of them are likely to come to pass by 6pm is a different matter. Of course this won’t stop the rumour mill going into overdrive and a host of player sightings being reported throughout the day, although most fans’ expectations will be reasonably low for any significant last minute additions to their team. If you can drag yourself away from channel 405, let us know your thoughts on the day’s transfer activity and who you think will have headed where by 6pm.
